Young Composers' Competition

Conductor Jon Washburn created this biennial event to encourage the development of young composers and to stimulate the interest of young people in singing choral music and attending choral concerts. The competition provides young composers with the artistic direction and supervision that will enable them to pursue the art.

The compositions are judged in three categories: Elementary (ages 8-12), Secondary (ages 13-17), and College/University (ages 18-22). Within each category, a cash prize is awarded to both first- and second-place winners, plus a "Best of BC" prize.

The next competition will be held in May 2017.

Winners will be announced at the YOUTH & MUSIC concert on Friday, May 5, 2017. In addition, the first-prize pieces in each category will be performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

As part of our 2017 celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, the competition will give special consideration to entries which use a Canadian text, are about Canadian themes, and are in either official language (English and French) or a Canadian First Nations language. Young composers from all countries are welcome to submit pieces with Canadian connections.
