Toronto-born, Australian-raised tenor, Matt Gaskin has recently completed his Masters degree in Opera performance at the University of British Columbia, studying voice with J. Patrick Raftery. He performed the role of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at Bard on the Beach with the UBC Opera Ensemble, and in the Czech Republic with the European Music Academy. Matt also appeared with the UBC Opera Ensemble as Nika Magadoff in The Consul, and as Herzog von Urbino in Eine Nacht in Venedig, as well as taking part in the 2016 VSO Christmas Concerts, 2016 Czech Republic Tour and 2015 China Tour. Other performances include Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos with Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT) in Toronto, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte (SOLT) and Tito in La Clemenza di Tito at the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy. Matt took part in the masterclass and Singer Behind the Song series with Ben Heppner, and in 2015 was the tenor soloist for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the UBC Symphony Orchestra.
Matt has appeared with the Vancouver Opera chorus in their recent productions of Otello and Turandot, and was a member of the Elmer Iseler Singers and Amadeus Choir in Toronto under Lydia Adams. In his spare time, Matt plays piano and composes. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of Toronto, and won the MacMillan Singers Choral Composition Competition two years in a row.
