Taka Shimojima

Taka Shimojima, tenor

Taka was born and raised in Vancouver, BC and has Japanese and Chinese heritage. His passion for music started at a young age. At age four, he taught himself how to sing, and at age six he taught himself piano. After joining beginner band in grade 8 for trumpet, he switched to bassoon in grade 9. He joined the school choirs in grade 11 and eventually went on to complete his Bachelor’s of Music from the UBC School of Music for bassoon. His love for singing never waned and he sang with multiple vocal and choral groups throughout his degree.

Taka currently sings with musica intima, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Vancouver Cantata Singers, and Holy Rosary Cathedral as a quartet member and cathedral choir member. He also works at the Vancouver Academy of Music as a private voice instructor and as the assistant choral conductor for both Kits Point Chorale and Raincity Chorus. While balancing all these performing groups, he also manages vocal clinics with multiple secondary schools in the Lower Mainland. Additionally, he teaches voice lessons privately from home in his spare time.

From his personal life, Taka is the son of a sushi chef and has a strong love for the culinary arts. In addition, he loves reading and exercising. Apart from the choral arts, he finds joy in styles such as gospel, soul, R&B, Motown, funk, jazz fusion, and smooth jazz. Taka is working to become a schoolteacher and hopes to inspire and lead others to become the best they can be.
